A few months ago, I began an internship with the East Villagers Organization. East Villagers is a non-profit organization that focuses primarily on funding children with congenital heart disease. As an intern, I was required to translate documents from Mandarin to English since the organization focused its projects in Eastern China. The first assignment given to me was a fourteen pages brochure that I had to translate within two weeks. Since this was one of the first times I was given such an enormous task within such a small time span, I panicked.
Families that live in Darfur face violence and bombs, forcing them to flee from their homes because of the conflict in Sudan. The club started two years ago after some students learned about Darfur in their AP history class. The club constantly tries to get their community involved and raise funds to support those families that fall victim to the violence in Sudan.
The atmosphere of Schoenfeld Campus Gym had been electrifying Thursday afternoon. The Fall Homecoming Pep Rally included numerous activities for Concordia’s sports team to partake in. For example, one “challenge” involved a member of the sports team getting wrapped up in toilet paper, under the pressure of a time clock. When time ran out, whichever individual was wrapped in the most toilet paper (or looked the most like they had just emerged from an Egyptian pyramid) won that game. The CCNY Pep Rally acted as an opportunity for the rest of the student body to become familiar with our famed athletic program, and to mingle with this elite status of the student.

After countless hours of baking, my group and I were able to raise $1250 which we used to purchase basketball hoops, plates, beds, silverware, cups, schooling for the children, and uniforms. Although we were not able to directly deliver these goods to the family ourselves, we were able to see pictures that were equally rewarding. Their faces and gratitude made the many nights of little sleep well worth
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is a student group on campus that aimed to provide support and resources to Hispanic students at Columbia and Barnard. I was responsible for keeping minutes at meetings, sending out weekly newsletters, and planning events. I joined this group because I wanted to be more involved in the Hispanic community on campus and wished to be in a position to benefit this community as well. I attended weekly Saturday meetings and helped in the planning of at least 1 event every month. I left the group due to personal problems that forced me to focus more on my mental health and school.

Our team was like no other, we were the Smallest but and Mightiest team at City Year Miami. One of our most unique aspects of our team was that we had to share our totally super mega ultra awesome Team Leader Alexa Reichbaum with Redland Middle School Which became our sister school. Together we conquered many team builders and trainings including our Community Mapping event which was planned by Redland’s Glyn Turner and Shelby Chaney as well our very own Daniqua Denson! They made the event into a very enjoyable scavenger hunt. We divided ourselves (15 in total) into three team where we competed amongst the other teams to take pictures of ourselves in all the locations that were on the scavenger hunt before any other team.
