As President Jimmy Carter once said, “We believe in the separation of church and state, that there should be no unwarranted influence on the church or religion by the state, and vice versa.” Separation of church and state has been controversial since 1791 when the 1st amendment was made. And in 1905 a law was passed to keep the state and church separate. Although in more recent years the line has become blurred and some people have begun to believe that there shouldn't be any separation. The church and state should be separate because it causes discrimination and unfairness, even though people don't think that it sways votes or has any effect on the country's future.

The constitution, the amendments, and the bill of rights are some of the oldest legal documents in America and are the framework of the country. And they include what the founders thought would be best for the country and the people. And the quote says, “The 1787 Constitution of the United States never mentions God, the Creator, providence, Jesus, any church denomination or salvation. It is an entirely secular document, followed by the bill of rights…” This supports this because it is saying that the constitution is meant for the government to be without a religious agenda. Changing this would mean that new additions would need to be added to the constitution and bill of rights. And then later the text adds, “Justice Hugo L. Black declared, "The First Amendment has erected a wall between church and state. That wall must be kept high and impregnable. We could not approve the slightest breach ... ."(Jenkinson, Clay )
This is saying that the judicial branch could not approve of the church and state being unseparated. This is because the First Amendment keeps a wall between church and state so this must be upheld. The state should remain separate from the church because it was intended to be from the very start and the first amendment protects this so if they become unseparated there would need to be changes made to the constitution and
