Septimus Warren Smith, a thirty year old shell-shocked World War 1 veteran is lost in his own mind and has detached himself from reality. He believes that he is somehow connected to the tree’s and doesn't want them to be cut down. The motorcar that backfired outside Mulberry’s shop window took Septimus back in time to when he was in the war. He began blaming himself for the traffic the car caused “ It is I who am blocking the way” (Woolf 15), and envisions it bursting into flames.
