In the novel, Serafina and the Black Cloak, by Robert Beatty, Serafina struggles with not being seen and not feeling as if she’s part of the Biltmore and feels as if she’s not normal. What would it take for you to transform your entire life? For Serafina, it was a man in a black cloak. In Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty, Serafina had been ignored by everyone but her pa for 12 years, she didn’t even know who her mom was. Serafina wanted to be acknowledged and wanted to be a part of the Biltmore, but she couldn't. This is shown when the author writes “She didn't want to go another step, but friends had to help friends. She didn't know much about life, but she did know that, knew that for sure, and she wasn’t going to run away like a scared-out-of-her-wits squirrel just when someone needed her most” (Beatty 18) The author is showing how Serafina is selfless by Serafina staying and risking her life for a rich person, and Serafina calls this girl her friend. Another quote as evidence for this is “In one swift motion, she hurled herself onto the point of the angel’s gleaming sword. The sword slashed the side of her neck with searing pain as its tip pierced into the folds of the Black Cloak.”(Beatty 260) This quote also proves that Serafina is selfless and willing to sacrifice herself for the children of the Biltmore and people hurt because Serafina is willing to hurt herself to save the lives of the people trapped in the cloak.
