Serial Killers

A serial killer by definition, is a person who murders more than two people over a certain span of time, usually following a foreseeable pattern (Brogaard). For example, Jeffrey Dahmer, Myra Hidley, and H. H. Holmes are all considered serial killers for their gruesome murders. Although every murderer has different motives behind their crimes, most serial killers tend to kill because they had a rough childhood past and or have psychological issues. There are signs people may show which involve the commencing of their psychopathic emotions that may lead to becoming unmerciful killers. The reasoning behind it varies from gaining power, being egotistical, or underlying sexual motives. Having a sense of authority or control over a situation will make the murderer feel in charge of the crime, even if they have already been caught. "Real Crime and Dr. Yardley said: ‘Egoistical serial killers often can’t help but brag about the atrocities they’ve committed..." (Woollaston), killers tend to appreciate their work and boast about their crimes to others. Certain killers could go as far as to explicitly describing how they assassinated their victims, typically in the form of a letter, to the family of the victim or to the police just to gloat. Some serial killers go visit their victims' graves or keep a "trophy" to remind themselves of what they have accomplished. Lust seeking murderers obtain sexual satisfaction from victims by raping them before or after ending their life (Freeman). Curtis Straughter, aged 19, was drugged and strangled on February 18, 1991. Dahmer first dismembered him, then pulverized his bones and threw them in the garbage. On April 19, 1991, Errol Linsey was strangled after he was promised money in exchange for nude photos. After strangling Linsey, Dahmer performed oral sex with the body then dismembered him. A month later, on May 24, Tony Hughs was lured into. Dahmer's apartment by writing to him, because Hughs was deaf and mute. Dahmer told him he wanted him to pose nude, but later killed him the same way as he did the previous victim. Only three days later, Dahmer took the life of a 14-year-old boy named, Konerak Sinthasomphone by drugging and experimenting on him before strangling him to death. The inhumane experiments were performed on this child whilst he was still alive. The experiment he did was drilling a hole in his skull and filling the frontal lobe with hydrochloric acid in order to be a "zombie." Dahmer wanted to have complete control over his victim and he believed that by turning him into a "zombie" he would accomplish that to fulfill his psychotic sadistic needs. But, the experiment failed, leading Dahmer to dispose of the corpse in acid to leave it to dissolve. At age 20, Matt Turner was asphyxiated on June 30, 1991 and was left to rot in his apartment.
