Serial Killers: Ted Bundy

There have been many serial killers throughout America’s history, however, Ted Bundy is one of the more prolific ones of the 20th century. During his reign of killings, he allegedly killed more than thirty-five women and decapitated almost half of them. Although he was convicted of those thirty five or so women, the actual number of murders he committed could be higher. His method of acquiring his victims was by finding them in a public place, feigning an illness or disability and baiting his victims to his vehicle where he would overpower them and bring them to an isolated area. His aunt recalled a time when she woke up to find knives from the kitchen surrounding her bed and in her bed sheets and Ted looking up at her with a sinister smile (Ramsland, K. 2013, p.19). Throughout his school years, he was a B-average student and he was reported by his peers as “a good-looking, smart, very shy, and sensitive boy” (McClellan, J. 2006, p.21). However, later in life he described his time in high school as “ was an alien among humans” because he didn’t understand how people connected to and developed interpersonal relationships with each other. Since there are many traits of psychopaths or people with antisocial personality disorder have in common, it is hard to differentiate from them. In Criminal Behaviour: A Psychological Approach, Bartol and Bartol reference the American Psychiatric Association to define antisocial personality disorder as “a pervasive pattern of disregard for , and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood.” while they explain that the modern use of the term ‘psychopath’ is “used to describe a person who demonstrates a discernable cluster of psychological, interpersonal, and neurological features that distinguish him or her from the general population.” (Bartol, C.
