In Edwidge Danticat A Wall of Fire Rising the setting is very important. The setting is in shantytown a village in Haiti. A family of three is living in a one room shack there. The shack has a rusting tin roof and is located on a dirt road. Danticat uses the setting to show the family’s attempt to survive in poor living environments. The setting tells us so much about the characters.
Guy who is a husband to Lili and a father to Lil Guy is currently unemployed. He struggles to find permanent work. He is a strict and loving father. He loves his family a lot, and wants so much more for them. He is not happy with his income that supports his family. He sometimes gets work at the sugar mill. He is number 78 on the hire list for the sugar mill. Guy never wanted to be like his like father. His father was a struggling man too. To ensure that Lil Guy would not end up like him, he wanted to put Lil Guy on the work list at the sugar mill. He thought was by the time he is old enough they would have a spot for him at the sugar mill. His wife Lili was against this idea, and made Guy agree not to put Lil Guy on the work list. Lil Guy who has curly hair was nick named “pepper head” by the boys at school. He is full of life. He is focused and has bright future ahead. He spends his time learning his lines in the school play. Lil Guy let’s his nerves get the best of him at times and forgets his lines in the play. He plays the role of Boukman who is the hero in the play. His last words to his father were lines from the play. He stood next to his father’s body and recited “A wall of a fire is rising and in the ashes, I see the ashes, I see the bones of my people. Not only those people whose dark hollow faces I see daily in the fields, but all those souls who have gone ahead to haunt my dreams.
