Many different types of crimes and criminals are under the sexual crime category. Not all sex crimes are violent, and not all sex crimes are considered severe enough to be felonies. To break down the types of crimes, we must get into what constitutes a sexual act as a crime. Sexual crimes are any offenses that involve sexual, physical harm, or mental or emotional harm to a victim. As touched on above, in the series Fifty Shades of Grey, the things they were doing, although violent, were not crimes because they both did the acts consensually. In pop culture or general media, society associates sexual crimes and sexual violence with rapists and child molesters, who commit stranger-on-stranger crimes usually within the moment or plan on taking someone whoever it is. This is not always the case, as seen throughout time and history, it can be anyone, and it takes something as simple as taking consent away from sex, sexual acts, or even sex contracts like in Fifty Shades, to change the legality of sex and what it will suddenly make it into a crime. Offenders come in all shapes and sizes, whether it is someone you know personally, someone you are related to, or someone who tries to justify what they are doing because they have gone through it before. It can also be someone who thinks the victim is not a victim, because of the way they are dressed or even because they just have a deep hatred for themselves or the gender of their victim, like offenders who have a deep misogynistic hatred for women that they do …show more content…
