Sex Education and Rape Myths: Kayla Murray

While there are many subjects within the sphere of love and sex, there is one that seems to stand out above the others. Many issues experienced in love and sex as well as popular culture can be solved by refining sex education. Not only does sex education influence things such as rape myths and teenage pregnancy rates, it also influences violence against women. The system of sex education in the United States is a huge topic to discuss, so this essay will not focus on all of those aspects and their reform; but it will discuss the different types. In this essay, I will argue that the lack of proper sex education assists in perpetrating rape myths, as well as increasing violence towards women. Sex education in general is taught in most United States high schools, and the curriculum typically falls under three separate types, only one of which can even be remotely considered a viable education. The first and potentially most damaging is coined “Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage programs” which do what it sounds like they do: advocate waiting to have sex until marriage. They typically have little to no information about what sex actually consists of outside of biological names for various organs, and have no information about contraceptives, the risks of teen pregnancy or topics such as rape or sexual assault. The second type is “Abstinence-Only”, which of course advocates that students wait to have sex, though perhaps not specifically until marriage. However, unlike the “Abstinence-Only-Until-Marriage”, it does provide essential information about some topics.
