Humans tend to avoid talking about taboo topics at all costs. You wouldn’t ask your boss how much is on his paycheck or a newlywed couple when they’re having their first child. Having to look someone in the eye and discuss an awkward or uncomfortable subject is quite a daunting task. If we can help it, we won’t do it; however, dismissing a critical issue can have a worsening effect on the problem at hand. An unfortunate example would be society’s aversion of sex trafficking. Even in developed countries where sex trafficking isn’t considered a major issue, it has widespread impacts on the economy, society, and government that mar all citizens. Educating young girls on an international scale would not only warn them against the tricks that traffickers present to them, such as the false promise of employment, but they would also be able to eventually gain jobs that would provide them income and avert them from seeking job opportunities in potentially unsafe places. Likewise, the earnings that the educated women supply for their future families would prevent their children from having to enter the labor workforce in their youth, instead allowing them to attend school as their mothers did and continue the cycle of education. In addition, microfinance/microcredit, or the process of providing small loans to the poor in order for them to build businesses, could be an incredible economic solution for human trafficking. Providing disadvantaged women with the means to make their own income will prevent them from being exposed to the lies of employment that traffickers use to lure people into their traps. This would also promote economic growth within a country that would limit the opportunities that traffickers have to prey on insecure populations.
