Chicago is widely known for its architecture, food, and the big bean. Unfortunately, the city is also known for its high crime rate, making it one of the most dangerous cities for women. In addition, active gangs pose another threat to Chicago residents. These factors endanger the lives of many men and women.
One of the most significant crimes in Chicago is sexual assault. According to the Chicago Police Department, there were 2067 sexual assaults in 2021 alone (Chicago Police Department, 2023). And in 2022, there were 2033 sexual assaults in Chicago. This means that in one day there are 6 victims of assault. This is true for Chicago only. Although the numbers have decreased somewhat, there is no evidence that the number of sexual crimes is decreasing significantly. It is also important to remember that these numbers only include reported incidents and many cases go unreported. In many cases, sexual assault victims suffer from trauma. One of the most common post-assault disorders is PTSD. Victims who suffer from PTSD tend to have panic attacks when something triggers memories of the events (Marston-Salem). In addition, they often suffer from depression and turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with their trauma.
