Modern Women Women rights have been postponed more than any other minority besides homosexuals. Even former slaves got the right to vote a decade after freedom besides in some parts in the country. Women of all color and all abilities did not get this entitled right until the 1920’s. Now that women have come so far since then there is still a lot of fighting to be done. Most of the problems being focused on are work related. They have yet to really find a place or fit in. Often seen more as a burden then an equal counterpart to a business, women are going to need a completely new revision in the workforce. The federal courts did not recognize sexual harassment as a form of sex discrimination until the 1970s, because the problem originally was perceived as isolated incidents of flirtation in the workplace (Batten). This can effect productivity, discourage them from maintaining their position or even advancing it. Sexual harassment may be physical, such as kissing, hugging, pinching, patting, grabbing, blocking the victim’s path, leering or staring, or standing very close to the victim. It may also be verbal, which may be oral or written and could include requests or demands for dates or sex, sexual jokes, comments about the victim’s body or clothing, whistles, catcalls, or comments or questions about the victim’s or harasser’s social life or sexual life (Batten). Not only is this common for women working but also for women trying to et an education. One of the first surveys on the prevalence of sexual harassment was the influential Redbook survey in 1976, to which 9,000 women responded (Safran 1976). The survey found that nine of ten women responding had suffered at least one form of unwanted sexual attention at work (Batten).
