The Case of Sexual Harassment in the United States
Revealing incidents of sexual harassment has altered dramatically over the last few months (Noguchi). Allegations have started to cause powerful people to resign from positions of authority or even get fired from their high status jobs. The newfound interest has developed the issue of whether sexual harassment is as widespread as the media is saying or if it is just being exaggerated to get attention. Sexual harassment needs to be talked about and solved because it causes harm to the everyone, can cause behaviors to expand and become more deviant, and is morally wrong. Due to the high number of women coming forward with sexual harassment allegations, the media has made this one of the highest publicized issues in current news.
In the past, women have tried to talk about harassment to try to get the problem resolved, but the talk always died down quickly. Jennifer Lawless explains why it always died out in an article called “Victims of Sexual Assault Speak Up, But Legal Fears Can Inhibit Them”; "It was easy for that to sort of die down and fade away, because in 1991 and 1992, we didn't have this instantaneous way of transmitting information” (Noguchi). Their voices are heard just like they were with the suffrage movement in the late ninth century and early twentieth century (Women’s Suffrage). The same sort of attention is being given to the current issue. Information now spreads across the United States quickly as we have technology that allows us to transmit messages almost instantly. This technology has helped women to gather more supporters. Women and other victims of sexual harassment are speaking out in public about what has happened to them, with hopes that their stories will be heard and give comfort to those that are scared to come out
