In the book Shades of Gray, Will thinks his Uncle Jed is a coward for not fighting in the Civil War. Later, as the story progresses, Will starts to respect his uncle and realize that he didn't fight in the war because he didn't believe in it. I think Will's uncle's decision was right not to fight in the war.
The primary motivation behind why I think Uncle Jed's decision was correct not to fight in the war since he didn't have faith in fighting for something he didn't believe in.
