Introduction: There are a number of factors which influence health both in the individual context and at the community level. It is important to understand challenges faced in addressing health but also to identify support structures and assets available. It is important to look forward to the future with hope and to begin addressing issues by implementing intervention. This essay will discuss such issues, especially within the context of the Manenberg community where the story of Shafieqah has been explored. Also to be discussed, is the label LSES. She is proud that she has made it to matric, especially since she is one of the few in her class to do so, and the first in her family. Although Shafieqah understands the struggles in her community and has had to overcome many challenges to make it to matric, she remains hopeful about her future and the community. After matriculating, she would like to become a maternity nurse but will work first before she begins her studies. Despite falling pregnant as a teen, Shafieqah has shown immense determination. Not only has she worked hard academically to pass, but also took on a job to assist her family to pay for her matric ball. Despite her hope, Shafieqah still has fears about her future and some uncertainty about the community in which she lives. With unemployment rife in Manenberg, job security is a major concern for Shafieqah. We are shown insight into Shafieqah’s thoughts when she expresses her feelings about the matric ball. She is extremely excited about this night, as it is her first opportunity to show the community who she really is and to dress up like a princess. She lives with her parents, grandparents, sister and child. The community of Manenberg is one troubled by gangsterism, violence and unemployment (amongst many other challenges). She attends Manenberg High School, where the challenges of living in such a community are clearly visible. Only a quarter of the class made it to matric, and many were unable to pass their final exams. Despite this, Shafieqah receives great support from her teachers at school who are caring and encouraging. One of the challenges in this community is teen pregnancy, of which Shafieqah knows all too well. When she fell pregnant, her father was angered and would not speak to her. This was a great source of stress to both Shafieqah and her family. After having her child whom she loves dearly, she has regained a healthy relationship with her father and now receives great support from her family (Al
