The parallels that I draw are between Prospero in The Tempest and the Inmates in the documentary Shakespeare Behind Bars. I chose one of the core values of Shakespeare Behind Bars, “becoming a responsible member of a group, community, and family” and explain how Prospero's decision to forgive his enemies is an example to the inmates of how to accomplish this core value through the characters in the play. As Prospero learns what it means to become a responsible member of a group, community, and family in The Tempest, the inmates in Shakespeare Behind Bars follow his example and learn the same core values through the characters in the play. Towards the end of the documentary Red whos playing Miranda and Hal who is playing Miranda's father Prospero start to grow irritable and annoyed with each other. Red is talking with Big G about Hal, and how he sees his own father in Hal, “Hes like my true father, he is, he's selfish don't care about nobody but himself. Like my dad, that's why I probably take it out on him so much, but I still love him and stuff like that.” Through the on screen relationship of Miranda and Prospero Red has an outlet to let out his feelings of his own troubles with his true father. These raw emotions he channels towards Hal create a problem between the two friends. In an interview with Hal he says, “Red has a lot of issues with his parents like I do with mine I think that's one of the reasons why we have become such good friends.” Hal realises that the thing that creates arguments between them is also the thing that brings them together, and the two characters they play bring out these similarities in each others troubled past. Even though the two friends have conflicts they become responsible members of the community by forgetting their differences and forgiving each other, much like Prospero. Red says, “but I still love him and stuff like that” showing that he feels love for another member of the community, or even family. The inmates don't get to see
