Shattered Lives Kristin Lewis Analysis
In the memoir Unbroken, Laura Hillenbrand and Louie Zamperini show that having a determined mindset can help get through the horrors of POW camps. The POW camp Louie was in was terrible. He would get beaten everyday for no reason and be forced to do hard labor. The author uses words such as “broken”, “fractured, and “shattered” and paired them with the word “POW” to show that the Japanese soldiers had no mercy against the American soldiers. Throughout the POW camp terrible things happen to Louie and he is forced to see horrible events.
In the article, “Shattered Lives” by Kristin Lewis, Dania faces many challenges. One challenge that she faced was that she was part of a war and had to leave all of the things she loved behind. On page 6 the author states “They faced a devastating choice: Stay and risk death, or leave everything behind…” Another piece of text evidence is “ In september, their choice became clear. They fled.”
In “She’s Come Undone”, Dolores Price is a woman who tells her story from the age of four to the age of forty years old. She goes through many obstacles in which first include her mother’s miscarriage that left her mother wounded mentally, she would walk around like a zombie and disregard her daughter, Dolores. Since, the miscarriage her mother and father drifted apart and eventually got divorced leaving Dolores devastated and left not understanding why all this is happening. Her family then separated and she goes to live with her grandmother and mother where they soon buy a TV which starts it all. Wally Lamb the author of She’s Come Undone was born in Norwich, CT which influences the setting of the book.
In the book Twisted by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character in the book is Tyler Miller. The other main characters are Hannah which is his sister, Bethany Milbury, Yoda, and chip. One of the worse decisions he made is painting the school because that gave him a bad reputation. The other bad decision he made was when he didn 't do what Bethany wanted him to do so that was a bad decision because she made a whole lot of drama about it, and made him feel bad and was very rude about everything. He should have just did it and it wouldn 't have been his fault he may have felt bad but he wouldn 't have gotten the cops called because she gets passed around a lot so its not his fault at all I honestly think that everything that happened was all
“Thump! The jury finds you guilty! Three life sentences without parole!” the young boys and girls that hear this sentence generally aren’t considered the best of kids, however locking away a juvenile for life takes much more thought than it takes to address this sentence to a legal adult. In “Locked Away Forever” by Patricia Smith the question is attempted to be answered, which is should juveniles receive life sentences without chance of parole?
In the story, When a Southern Town Broke a Heart, Jacqueline Woodson uses a variety of symbolism and metaphor to show that when you get wiser, your perception of things change. One example of Woodson conveying this theme is when she writes, “When the deep green beauty revealed my place and time in history and laid claim to that moment all children know, when the tendrils of adulthood move toward us, showing themselves long before we are ready to see.” This quote describes when she realized the nostalgia of her home was masking the bitter and unfortunate side that “adulthood” is showing her. This directly relates to the theme because as she becomes wiser and more experienced, (the tendrils of adulthood) her perception changes. (showing themselves long before we are ready to see.)
I couldn't hear the words, but I could hear the sound—his heavy, hard voice going on and on. Then there was Sam's voice and he was shouting, too, and then Father again”, (Collier and Collier). It also creates death which results in permanently split families apart. This shows how war tears and breaks families apart. Splitting families apart is the final reason why war is futile.
As Helen Keller once quoted, “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.” Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken tells the life story of Louis “Louie” Zamperini. Through his troubles as a child, emerged a strong-willed Olympic runner, who later became a military aviator. He was lost at sea and then captured by the Japanese as a prisoner of war. He endured years of abuse and suffering but still managed to stay true to who he was.
In the book “Killers of the Dream” by Lillian smith there are several ideas that are brought forward that really demonstrate that the author exaggerates the true situation and the state of affairs in the south. In the context of the book, the south was experiencing serious crisis when the whited propagated segregation against the blacks and other low class whites. The paper contains the author’s thesis and a summary of the author’s primary points. Additionally, the paper examines whether the authors account is incomplete, questionable or cases where the account does not make sense. The social profiling that resulted was regrettable and brought serious repercussions to the society in general.
In the poem, “What Every Soldier Should Know”, Brian Turner, details the ever-present threat of death in a war zone. This poem expesses not only the terror of the American soldiers, but also exemplifies the emotions that the Middle Eastern soldiers feel towards the American soldiers. The soldiers are experiencing death, chaos, and disorder, but for some of the middle eastern people, they experience that every day. A lot of Middle Eastern people are normal people, defending their home land, their family, and their country.
George Saunders first published The Semplica Girl Diaries in The New Yorker in 2012 and then again in his collection of short stories Tenth of December, in 2013. The main characters are a middle aged, unnamed man and his family (a wife, two daughters and a son). In an interview Saunders admitted that the inspiration for this twisted story came from a dream which explains the origin of a strange concept in it— Semplica girls, women from underdeveloped countries paid to hang in rich people’s gardens, connected to each other by a wire in their brains. However, the main message is a conscious writing choice. This story explores the struggles deprived people go through and choices they make when facing them.
In The Catcher in the Rye, it is observed that the novel is about grief. There are 5 stages of grief: denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and finally acceptance. The Catcher in the Rye shows how Holden goes through the grieving process. By the end of the novel it shows how Holden has reached closure or a way to let go.
Have you ever realized that a place you have treasured all your life is actually not as perfect as you imagined? That’s what happened to Jacqueline Woodson. As we grow up, our outlook on life changes and sometimes that can be very scary. In When A Southern Town Broke A Heart by Jacqueline Woodson, the author introduces growing up and experiencing change as a central idea in the story. When Woodson was a child, she wanted to think that segregation was a thing of the past.
“Virgins”, by Danielle Evans, is a tragic story narrated by a young girl who places what she views as “inevitability” into her own terms. The protagonist of the story is Erica, a young, physically well-developed girl who has her own view on men and what exactly they want from her. Throughout the story, a constant battling environment surrounds her, and one side of her keeps pushing her to the verge of giving up everything - even her virginity. Evans uses the title of the story to question the importance of finite as virginity in relation to the value of a woman’s body. Through the use of character development, plot, themes, language and style, setting and figurative language, she is able to come up with a true proposal of the both self-value,
Suzanne Berne starts out describing Ground Zero with the sense of the moist air of the earl spring season in New York City. She finds a large crowd of people from various nations waiting patiently in line. In the third paragraph, her symbolic description captures our attention when she describes the following: “Nothing is what it first looked like, the space that is now ground zero. But once your eyes adjust to what you are looking at, "nothing" becomes much more potent, which is absent. " Berne expresses her emotional feelings revealed through this paragraph.
