The Shawshank Redemption was released in 1994, it was directed by Frank Darabont. The film was shot in Mansfield, Ohio at the Ohio State Reformatory. The movie was inspired by short story “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” written by Stephen King. The targeted audience for this film is mostly adults and older matured teenagers because of its content. The movie Shawshank Redemption is about Andy Dufresne, a bank merchant who is wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. He is sentenced to life imprisonment at the Shawshank prison. While in prison, Andy is faced with a lot conflict, but fortunately for Andy he quickly becomes friends with some of the other prisoners. One of his friends is Red. Dufresne has become “comfortable” with his environment in the prison, his library, status, etc. The death of Tommy helps Andy to realize that he wants to break free from his seemingly “comfortable” life in prison and go accomplish the things that he wanted to do in life, such as traveling to Zihuatanejo. The death of Tommy led to the climax of the film, Andy’s escape. The ending was phenomenal, Andy obtained his freedom, and everyone else got what they deserved. The officers were put into jail which is ironic because they had all of the power over the inmates and treated them like trash, but they are now inmates and will most likely receive the same type of treatment. The death of Warden Norton was the most ironic part of the film, he presented himself as a holy man who “believes in discipline and the bible” although he was withholding money and did many illegal things. The film did a great job of showing that even people who seem “good” can be corrupt and tyrannical, and that people who are perceived as “bad” can be the kindest and most hardworking
