Shawshank Redemption was a movie directed by Frank Darabont. Shawshank Redemption follows a man, Andy Dufresne, who goes to prison for a murder he did not commit, because his wife and her lover was killed by another man. There are a lot of themes displayed in this film such as corruption and freedom. The main theme being Escape, there are many scenes in the film that shows this theme such as when Andy plays the music to the prison which gives everyone a sense of freedom and escape from reality. Escape is a very prominent theme in the film, the film portrays it, in very different ways. The film portrays the theme, escape, by using film and literary techniques in which these techniques build characters in the film and builds upon the audience’s understanding of the film and the setting the film is based in. Andy escapes from prison approximately twenty years by using a rock hammer and hiding the hole with posters. A very ironic literary technique that is utilised for well is when it is revealed that Andy hid his rock hammer in the Bible given by Warden Norton and quotes him on the front cover, “Salvation lies within” in which Andy replies “It certainly does”, this is a very smart and thought-out technique as it was practically stretched throughout the whole film. A very interesting film technique that is utilised is when Andy starts to break the sewage pipe using a rock and using the sound of thunder to suppress the sound of him breaking the pipe, there were many intelligent use of effects and good camera angles, for example when Andy smashes the rock against the pipe, the close-up camera shot is utilised very well as you can see the sweat on his face the lightning reflecting off his face.
