Last night on February 4, 1787, General Benjamin Lincoln attacked members of the Shays’ Rebellion, and successfully captured 150 of the rebels. As a result, Daniel Shays left Massachusetts and fled to Vermont. Shays Rebellion was an armed rebellion consisting of 1,200 angry farmers from Massachusetts. They caused major chaos in this state. On December 26, 1786 Daniel Shays and the rebels revolted in Springfield, Massachusetts insisting that the state legislature address their issues, such as lack of money.
Vicksburg was a critical battle to both the Union and the Confederates because of whom would have the right of the Mississippi River. If the Union won the battle, they would regain control of the Mississippi River; thus, opening vital avenue of commerce that had been closed since secession and denied by Confederate Army since they trained by the river. Furthermore, if the Union took control, they would divide the Confederate States in half, disturb the Confederacy supply route, and cut Richmond off from western half of Confederacy. Cutting of Richmond would achieve a major objective of the Anaconda Plan.
Daniel Shays once said, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Daniel Shays was once the outgoing patriot in the 1700's taking the blood of tyrants. But something changed and he became the tyrant, taking the blood of loyal patriots. Daniel Shays is known as a hero and a rebel. He is known for his heroic military services in the continental army, but he was rebellious at one time where he caused many protests that eventually lead to a rebellion. "

This event was a test to show if the new country could take the violence current countries had to take. Shays Rebellion showed the American government was weak and needed a change soon. This event was so tragic that this led to the destruction of The Articles of Confederation. In current day America we are now governed by a stronger government under The Constitution that is why the event is so important in American history and that is why I chose this event.
What took place in Massachusetts during the years 1786 through 1787 shocked many. Shays’ Rebellion is directly linked to the high taxes and call for debt collection imposed by the government after the American Revolution (Danver 207). A group of newly settled farmers lead by a veteran of the Revolution, Daniel Shays, band together in hopes of changing the future; in hopes of living in a world without the economic injustices they were facing. It even wound up getting the attention of George Washington who stated that the rebellion played an integral role in his decision to attend the Philadelphia Convention (Danver 215). In a letter addressed to General Henry Knox, George Washington expressed his complete and utter shock regarding the recent uprising.
Many people tend to believe the end of the Revolutionary War meant the end of all problems in America, but that was not the case. The return to a normal lifestyle after the war was long-awaited and anticipated by just about everyone, as soldiers were reunited with their families and people once again had access to all the things made unavailable during wartime. This boom in morale and economics was however, short lived as the newly established government was faced with paying off the debts to other countries and the soldier who risked their lives for years. I think that Tomas Jefferson would agree to the modern rebellions today because both the letter about Shay’s Rebellion and the Constitution gives some evidence to this claim. In the letter about Shay’s Rebellion, Jefferson says that he would not want 20 years without any rebellions. Jefferson thinks that rebellions show the government the things they should keep and the things they should not keep. He wants to have the people keep their rebellious spirit to help improve the U.S government. With rebellions the U.S government can change laws and fix their rules to what the people want.
Shays Rebellion “The people who have stepped up to demand rights for themselves and others are likely to be put in jails from home.” Why would they be put in jail? What did Shays rebellion do to be put in such a harsh condition? You might be asking these questions, but surprisingly enough, there is plenty of evidence to prove why Shays Rebellion should have been put in jail for their actions. Although many believe that Shays and his followers were freedom-fighters, they were actually rebels because they could have handled the situation better,they were not logical about the situation and they caused many riots.
Evidence from the letter of Shay's rebellion and the Deceleration Of Independence supports the claim that Thomas Jefferson would favor modern day protests. "...to repeat every form of lies about our being in anarchy... we have believed them ourselves. " This piece of evidence shows that Jefferson thinks the lies of that Shay's rebellion caused so chaos and confusion have been around for so long that we are starting to believe the lies ourselves. "
Daniel Shays was the leader of the Shays’ Rebellion. The revolution was group of protestors who tried to stop judgments against farmers and free the impounded farmers who were arrest due to their debts not paid. The rebellion was not successful, but changes were made to the Articles of Confederation. Shays was common farm laborer before he went to the Armed Services. He was a former Continental Army officer who later became a captain.
The boxer rebellion took place in china between the 1899-1901. It was a violent anti-foreign and anti-Christian revolution. The militia united in righteousness (Yihetuan) they were the ones who started it all but were referred to as the boxers. They never rebelled against the Manchu rulers of china and their qing dynasty. The martial arts and calisthenics they practiced had a lot to do with their name.
The rebellion also lead to somewhat of a victory for the farmers, as the tax was repealed years later. Like the Whiskey Rebellion, Shay's Rebellion was also an outcome of unfair taxes. New state taxes were very high because war debts had to be payed off, but farmers weren’t able to afford the taxes. Unlike the Whiskey Tax, these taxes were from the state government and not the federal government and since this rebellion took place in 1787, the Articles of Confederation were still in place. Because of this, a Revolutionary War veteran named Daniel Shay led around 1,200 farmers to an arsenal in Springfield, Massachusetts.
When the United States government put a federal tax on liquor, there were protests and riots throughout the country. This rebellion was called the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. It was the first federal tax of the U.S. Government and the catalyst was rumored to be Alexander Hamilton. The uprising that followed gave the new U.S. government the opportunity to establish federal authority using the military means at their disposal (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica 2018). It was originally a tax, but it became a true law in 1791 (Hoover 2014).
Anarchism is the political theory that hierarchical order is unnecessary in society and that human beings can cooperate without such structures overseeing them. Anarchy as a political theory has potential but it fails to recognize that authority is a natural state. Reworking some terms of authority may be beneficial for a kinder, more humane government in the future, but eliminating all forms of authority is not realistic. In an ideal anarchist society, with cooperation between all humans, we could experience true freedom in the form of individual autonomy. We should look to anarchist ideals such as equality and freedom of expression for how we would like to see the future, but relying on the philosophy to govern our lives would not likely pan out well.
