What’s your favorite children’s book? It very well might be a book by Shel Silverstein. He lived from 1930 to 1998, moving around and having many different jobs. He started his career as a cartoonist. He continued on to write children's books starting in the early 1960's. Shel Silverstein was a skilled and dedicated artist, author, and poet who introduced incredible works of art into the genre of children's literature by using difficult life experiences and translating them into deep underlying messages.
Sheldon Allan Silverstein, a man who was interested in the arts starting at a young age, was born to Nathan and Helen Silverstein in Chicago on September 25th, 1930. He had a sister named Peggy. As a child, he became intrigued with writing and drawing. He went to Roosevelt High School and then to the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts to continue on his artistic path. After attending the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, he went to Roosevelt University. However, he dropped out and became a part of the U.S. military in Korea and Japan in the 1950’s. While there, he worked as a cartoonist for "Stars and Stripes," a military magazine. This is his career began, with cartoons.
