Many factors are present in this type of question and is demonstrated within the novel. During the hardships of Lilys abuse, she constantly wonders what other people would think of her in terms of staying, especially after finding out that she is pregnant by claiming, “She'll pity me. Shell wonder why I never left him. She'll wonder how I let myself get to this point. She’ll wonder all the same things I used to wonder about my own mother when I saw her in my same situation. People spend so much time wondering why the women don't leave. Where are all the people who wonder why the men are even abusive? Isn't that where the only blame should be placed” (Hoover 274)? Although Lily had been suffering from abuse for a while, her stress and desire to escape is higher than ever after finding out that she is pregnant with Ryles baby. She not only has to find the courage to escape for herself, but now for her expected newborn daughter. Easier said than done, Lily questions what it truly means to analyze a toxic relationship from the outside. As emotions are high, Lily truly begins to think about the common factors of abuse and questions why the victim is to be blamed for staying instead of the fact that the abuser is taking advantage of the victim's emotions.
