Shephard's Argument Of Science Is More Than Just Rational Thinking

Science is supposed to be objective, rational and logical activity guided by careful analysis, without any influence of gut feelings or opinions. With this being said, I thought it is useful to keep this in perspective a little and look back on what the role of intuition and cooperation might be for scientists. In my opinion, I strongly agree with Linda Shephard’s argument that science is more than just rational thinking, it is something that requires every aspect such as one’s feelings or opinion. Consciously or subconsciously we all act according to what we feel. Intuition is defined as the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning. My own understanding of this is that intuition is somehow the …show more content…

I believe based on reading that the majority of science in today’s society is deductive, in other words hypothesis-testing oriented. In other cases, though, it is necessary to come up with a new theory. Most likely, building new theory comes from assembling many experiences in a way that is collectively useful or interesting, rather than picking out individual chains of reasoning. This needs to be based on rational arguments in order to be able to defend, but more than likely draws on more than just a couple of reasoned chains of arguments. Intuition aids in directing conflicting arguments especially with all its emphasis on rational analysis, one would think that science is not very controversial. Even so, when you operate in science, you realize that people disagree with one another all the time, and things can get quite heated, passionate or even personal which may result in disorderly behavior. It takes intuition about people to lead these situations and make sense of who sits where and why. Often times, truths differ being more or less noticeable or important to different scientists that lead to subtle or major differences in their world of scientific views. This phenomenon can be best understood by looking in on an overall perspective on people in science, based on intuition as well as key facts. In light of what is said above, while rational arguments remain the main aspect of the scientific method, to operate as a scientist
