Often people wonder whether anyone can really be taught to write and why so often we don’t know how to write by now. In order to understand what makes writing, and writers, “good” we first need to define and ask ourselves “What is writing?” Sherley Anne Williams an African-American poet and professor defines writing as, “I think writing is really a process of communication…. It’s the sense of being in contact with people who are part of particular audience that really makes a difference to me in writing.” Writing is a way of response to our audiences, when we write we want our audience to receive the purpose of our ideas and react to it. We want to communicate effectively the context of our idea. In order to recognize good writing, there needs to be good structure, logic, grammar and flow into the individuals writing. According to The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, “Writing is a process, contending with the decision-making, linearity, social context, subjectivity, and objectivity that constitute writing is a process …show more content…

According to Ann Handley author and speaker, “ Good writing anticipates what questions readers will have as they read a piece, and (before they ask them) it answer them.” A good writer will often ask himself or herself, “ What am I trying to say?” and “ What image will make it clearer?” before they start. A good writer knows about their topic and their topic is clear, logical, convincing and well understood. According to Applebee et al., 1993, “ Good writers know more about written language as a symbol system- that is, about spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.” For example: the teenagers, students from Mrs. Smith’s art class, went on a field trip to the museum.
