Characteristic of this story and other Sherlock Holmes stories use a first person narrator who is not the detective. Watson is like a guide for the readers presenting clues for them. Doyle hides information from the readers because Watson is limited in knowing what Holmes does, Doyle also does not allow the reader to know what Holmes is thinking. His novels also include a very familiar detective device called a red herring. False clues thrown all over the trail to distract the reader from the real evidence. For example in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes the exotic animals and Gypsies are all false clues. To throw Holmes and the reader off the trail. Extensive dialogue is the primary way Doyle presents background information. When the story is at an end in Doyle’s tells he has gave the reader enough information to solve the crime with a right answer. No tricks are placed at the end only Arthur testing the readers detective skills. In making them equal with the worlds best detective Sherlock Holmes. (Sherlock Holmes
