How does Howells use linguistic capital to categorize his characters? Men who are well spoken are trusted greater, looked upon more favorably, and in most cases are more successful than their poorly spoken counterparts. Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein stated, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world”. Silas Lapham, a character more inclined to embarrass himself with his lack of linguistic savvy than to impress his successful peers, is an example of a man with poor linguistic capital.
I found Sherman Alexie 's "Breaking and Entering" to be very interesting; a different look on the situation. All I 've ever hear in this type of siuations is the point of view of the victom. You alwasy here from the side that had the most dentrimental effect on the family. Just like Shermans story if the person breaking into his house was an older black or white person the outcome would have been tramedously different. Every day you hear the news talking about how another person has killed an inncoent young black person or how horrible the killer is even when nothing is known about the tradigy.
Alex Louie and his peers saw a path for freedom when war was declared. They saw an opportunity to fight and return with the solid credential to demand full citizenship rights. They applied to join the Canadian Armed forces and were turned down numerous times due to their ethnicity. They drafted an official national policy forbidding the Chinese to join. Once they were turned down in Canada, they looked to the United States to join their army.

Erick’s choices not only affect his life they also affect his family's life, especially his brother Paul's. Erik's choice to hit Tino, tell Arthur to hit Luis,and his choice to spray spray-paint in Paul's eyes all significantly affect Paul. Body paragraph #1: The first choice Erik made that affects Paul was when Erik hit Tino.
The development of Alyss as she matures through the story In the beginning of the novel Alyss is characterized as childish & immature. “ Will you be my king Dodge?” said Alyss “If it pleases you princess” he said trying to be nonchalant. Alyss is being ignorant and oblivious of how real life could be a real problem when you 're living in your imagine. Alyss is already thinking she is older than she actually is because people at her age don 't make those decisions.
The main character in the short story “Harrison Bergeron,” written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, is a fourteen-year-old boy named Harrison Bergeron. He escaped jail, where he was detained for suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is committed to become the Emperor, but not everything went as planned. In the story, Harrison Bergeron expressed that he was talented, strong willed, and extremely strong. Harrison Bergeron was quite talented.
Forgiving someone is one of the best things you could do. However, for you to forgive someone, you must accept what has happened and be ready to move on. Forgiving someone gives them an opportunity to redeem themselves, and allows them to move on as well. By accepting the past, you might find reasoning within the mistakes of the others, and give you as better understanding of how you should act. Forgiveness is a large part of The First Stone, and within the story is a valuable lesson:

This movie tells a story about 5 football players, their coach and their hometown, which idolizes them. The theme I get from Varsity Blues is about goals and heroes.
Cathy Ames has been criticized because she is completely evil. It has expressed throughout the novel that Cathy is inhuman. She has no emotion, no feelings, and no good in her. Many state that she is a symbol for Satan or a witch, who is pawn of Satan. People go so far in declaring that she is one of these evil spirits because even from birth she was filled with extreme evil and darkness, lacking characteristic that make up a human.

I was trying to save my life.” Being like Sherman Alexie meant he was neither accepted as a smart non-Indian boy, nor was he accepted as a dumb Indian boy. He was lost in the shadows, to never be welcomed into either group. Which in his case was a good thing, there in the shadows he had even more time to gain intelligence, he could read and increase his likelihood of forcing open the cement door that stood in his way.
In the book A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, my favorite character is Owen Meany. I admire the way he cares about his friends and is willing to do anything for them. He is concerned about John coming to Vietnam. To avoid this, Owen cuts off John’s finger so he cannot go into the war. This would be difficult, but he loves John and wants to protect him.
Without a good family structure in our lives, what are we? We have no good life structure, bad morals and habits, and no preparation for the future. Family is one of the most vital aspects of living a successful life and we see this being portrayed in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. With family we gain a valid example of good morals and habits, we model our lives after our parents and how they treat us and others, and we become good providers, protectors, and sacrifice for our own families in the future. When we are raised with an excellent family or parent figures in our childhood we will model their character to have good morals and habits in the future.
Being a writer of many different styles, Sherman Alexie started off as a poet before writing novels and short stories. His poetic manner continues in the story “Indian Education”. He has a wide array of dry statements mixed with metaphors and statements that are not meant to be taken literally. The trend for each years is that he starts off dry and literal and ends poetic and metaphorical. His description of his interactions with the “white girl” in seventh grade is a great example.
The Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington State was where Alexie first began to cultivate his love and understanding of reading. Although his parents were never able to obtain a consistently paying occupation, they were able to find an assortment of minimum wage jobs. This, by reservation standards, made his family middle class, and enabled his father to purchase numerous books that continued to fuel his love for reading. As a three year old toddler, Alexie made the defining decision to love books due to his love for his father who zealously pursued knowledge and reading.
Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak is an interesting children’s picture book. The main character is a little boy named Max, who has a wild imagination. He uses all five senses as well as thought and his actions to express his personality as well as how he reacts and interacts with his surroundings. Max’s id, ego and super-ego are greatly shown in this book through the way that the author has portrayed him. Not only is this book a children’s story, but it can also be perceived as a life lesson.
