“A section eight discharge is for the nuts in the service, the psychos, the Funny Farm candidates,” Elwin Lepellier explains (A Separate Peace 76). A psycho is an individual suffering from psychosis, which is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as, “A serious mental illness characterized by defective or lost contact with reality often with hallucinations or delusions.” By virtue of the fact that the aforementioned description relays the idea that perception of reality is either defective or not present, Leper can be considered one of two alternatives. Either all of Leper’s awareness has been corrupted by his experience in the armed forces, or only his thoughts connected to his fears misalign with what is known to be real. The latter is

When most people feel like they are close to God; they usually make good moral decisions. In Doubt by John Patrick Shanley; Sister Aloysius tells Sister James that “In the pursuit of wrongdoing, one steps away from God. Of course, there’s a price.” When stepping away from God someone is committing sins and they are doing things that are usually not accepted. As the main characters stepped away from God, they had to pay the price of making wrong choices and the price of being pressured by those choices.
Since the movie was based off the autobiography written by Chris Kyle about his life during and after his time serving overseas in Iraq, it stays true to the book and the real life events that happened to him. It allows for the audience to see all of the symptomology that he is experiencing, which meet the criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD according to the DSM-5. It shows the real life struggles he undergoes as well as how the prolonged exposure therapy helped him. While the movie sends a positive message about receiving treatment for mental illnesses, the death of Kyle is horrifying and saddening. Eddie Routh was a veteran who did not receive the appropriate treatment for his mental health disorder, and ultimately killed Kyle (Cooper & Eastwood, 2014).
Throughout life we are told to express our individuality and swim against the stream of the general population to put emphasis on the characteristics that make us, in short, individuals. Cherishing what makes an individual special and different is what establishes roots in creativity and self expression, however there is a forced false sense of comradery in today’s society that takes the form of involvement with the masses; peer pressure forces many people to fall into the mold of an average character. The Academy award winning film, “The Incredibles” displays the themes of expressing one’s true self and special qualities, and in contrast repression by society to fit a basic mold. These themes are elaborated on through the development of the main characters and expressed further through the supporting roles and their dialogue and endeavors.
