The late 19th century consisted of rigid work hours for children, the growth of strikes, and the use of yellow journalism. It was a challenging time for anyone below the upper class to live in. This is demonstrated throughout Newsies, a Broadway Musical displaying the challenges from this time period. Child labor, a major part of the movie, was the way of life and consisted of young children doing hard work as a vital part of the nation’s economy and income of families of the time. Another part of the movie, strikes, were the people’s way of refusing to work as a result of not getting their desires.

The film 13th directed by Ava DuVernay targets an intended audience of the Media and the three branches of the United States government with an emphasis that mass incarceration is an extension of slavery. It is intended to inform viewers about the criminalization of African Americans and the United States prison boom. 13th uses rhetorical devices in its claim to persuade the viewers by using exemplum in the opening seconds of the film. President Barack Obama presents statistics, saying “the United States is home to 5% of the world’s population but is home to 25% of the world’s prisoners.” Also the film uses a hyperbole in talking about the movie Birth of a Nation produced in 1915 which portrays a black man as a violent savage who will kill white women.
The movie chosen was “On Golden Pond.” The life transition and developmental issue present in the couple are the father 's cognitive decline and age-related memory loss, familial conflict and divergence between father and daughter. Norman and Ethel appear hunched and infirm which is a sign of osteoporosis or general bone density decline, and their hair is gray and thinning. Ethel seems to be in better shape than Norman. The movie is filled with conflict and resolution.
The Book of Eli is a film with a unique vision of a post-apocalyptic United States that has no history or semblance of society. When compared to the other films we have seen up to this point, Take Shelter, Soylent Green and Children of Men, The Book of Eli stands out as the first movie we have seen in this class that does not rely on a tyrannical social structure or society to display its post-apocalyptic narrative. All of these films have a society within their dystopian narrative that acts as an antagonist. Take Shelter has a society similar, if not exactly same, to the one we have today while Soylent Green and Children of Men have more tyrannical societies. In The Book of Eli there is no semblance of an orderly national society or culture.
“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” is a short story detailing the coming of age of a teenage girl named Connie and the predatory advances made on her by a man named Arnold Friend. It was adapted into a film titled Smooth Talk which expands upon the short story by providing more characterization to both Connie and the various people around her. “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” is told in a third-person limited omniscient perspective. Connie acts as the story’s protagonist, and Arnold Friend acts as the story’s antagonist. Given several context clues such as drive-in diners and handheld transistor radios being commonplace, it can be inferred that the story takes place in 1960s America.
The documentary, Merchants of cool, describes an evolving relationship between the vast teenage population and corporate America. The film provides an in-depth look at the marketing strategies and communication between these groups. Adolescents are shown as learners and adapters of the fast-paced world; they’re constantly exposed to fashions and trends. These young adults have a lot of disposable income and are willing to spend it, in order to gain social popularity. In other words, they are chasing ‘cool’.
In Liking What You See: A Documentary ,by Ted Chiang, there is a device that shuts off the aspects of someone’s brain that judges others on facial beauty, called calliagnosia. In reality, we have medicines such as antidepressants, Prozac, and Zoloft that change chemicals in an individual’s brain. A movie based on a story by George Lucas called, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, features spaceships that are able to travel into different galaxies.
The movie Kumare is a documentary that Vikram Gandhi did. I have never watched a movie like Kumare before, Kumare is very different and unique. In the movie there were a lot of messages, and I have learned some really good ideas that I can use in my life. One of the things I learned is that you do not need someone to help or a guru to help you, it is all in the mind.
Genetic analysis should be used freely in society, but only to help those who actually need it. The movie advocates the rules of your genetic makeup which leads to certain opportunities being presented to certain people with higher pedigrees than other. If a person's genetic makeup is sub-par you are unable to obtain your goals in life. While this is not true in the real world it could become a possibility in the future. The movie gives evidence of how your genetic makeup could affect who you love, what jobs you get, and expose you to certain discriminations in your life.
The conclusion of the argument, "Super Screen should therefore allocate a greater share of its budget next year to reaching the public through advertising," rests primarily on three not necessarily valid assumptions. First, it assumes that the quality of its movies are reflected by the reviewers' opinions. Second, it assumes that the public is unaware that Super Screen movies are of good quality. Finally, it assumes that increasing Super Screen's advertising budget will increase the number of people attending Super Screen movies.
Today there has been an increase in the awareness of mental health. In the sense that society has begun to take notice of how mental health effects each individual differently. The media has begun to incorporate a variety of illnesses to entertain to their audience. However, many have questioned if the media is accurately portraying these mental disorders. I chose to compare two popular movies Frankie & Alice and the 2007 version film Sybil.
