Throughout the story “In the silence” by Peggy S. Curry the protagonist; Jimmy is on a rollercoaster of emotions. At the beginning of the story, Jimmy is depressed and homesick because of his interactions with Angus Duncan. Although as he would finger is brooch he would remember home, this made him happier. When Angus sent Jimmy into “the silence” he was scared, scared of all the dangers around him. After a few nights “in the silence” he had already lost two of his sheep, one was killed when trampled by a horse, and another was dropped and killed by a sheep, he was worried about what Angus’ reaction would be along with the sheep’s safety in jeopardy.
War is a harsh reality that is inflicted upon the unwilling through the “need” of it’s predecessors and those whom wish it. All Quiet on The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque is about 19 year old Paul and his friends in the “Second Company”. Even though they are just out of school age, they have already seen things that many could not bear to even think about. Eventually, all of his friends die, and even Paul too, dies. Remarque uses diction and syntax as literary devices to express his anti-war theme, or lesson.

It tells the story about an unnamed city that begins to fall inexplicably silent. The random waves of silence were extremely short, but since they were on such an enormous scale-traffic stopping, the wind silencing, etc.
The movie Carved in Silence was a very provoking and eye opening documentary for me. It depicted the experience of the Chinese immigrants of Angel Island very well through the narration and the dramatic recreation. As an immigrant, the opening scene and the many stories told evoked many memories and reflections of my family 's journey and aspirations. The stories and descriptions in this documentary were very surreal because they were too hard to believe.
The film Hidden in Silence is based on a true story. During WWII, while Jews are sent to ghettos, Catholic teenager Stefania Podgorska (called Fusia in the movie) helps 13 Jews to save their life while raising her little sister. The film is not very explicit in the violence against the Jews; instead, it conveys a message of hope for mankind, despite the horror humanity shows itself in sensitive ways throughout the film. During the Holocaust, Fusia protects thirteen Jews men, women, and children in the attic of her home for more than two years. Every day, she risks execution by given food and water to the silent friends and neighbors living above her.
Bonnie Tucker and Matt Hamill; How are They the Same and How are They Different In the book, The Feel of Silence by Bonnie Tucker, you see the story of a young woman growing up deaf. Although medically and physically she is profoundly deaf, in the mind and heart she desperately wants to be a part of the hearing world. Even in her older years she never really accepted her deafness totally. On one hand you have the Deaf people in the world who are like Bonnie, but on the other you see people like the hammer, formally known as Matt Hamill.
Silence by Shusaku Endo is a tale of religious conflicts amongst Christians and Buddhists in Japan during the 1600’s. It documents the story of Sebastion Rodrigues, a young Jesuit priest in Portugal, who in 1637, sets out for Japan alongside two priest companions for missionary work, and to find out the truth about their teacher, Christovao Ferreira: a highly respected missionary and theologian in Japan who was recently shamed because of his apostasy. In Japan, Christians lived under heavy persecution and were often tortured into apostasy. One of the biggest themes explored in this story is the symbol of God/functions of God, as well as God’s lack of intervention and imminent silence in light of tragedies that Gods people face(d), and whether or not Gods silence has a meaning to it.
To call this era of drastic change the ‘Quiet Revolution’ is a vivid, and yet, paradoxical description. The Quiet Revolution was a time of intense socio-political and socio-cultural change in Quebec, which extended beyond Quebec’s borders because of its influence on contemporary Canadian politics. As a result of the effects of the changes that occurred during this Quiet Revolution, most Quebec provincial governments since the early 1960s have maintained political and social orientations based on the core concepts developed and implemented during the Quiet Revolution. As such, there is no doubt that the Quiet Revolution had a significant impact in Canadian History. This impact can be characterized by the prelude to the Quiet Revolution; the demographic evolution of Quebec; the social educational reforms that were put in place; the economic reforms and their impact; the rise of nationalism; and finally, the cultural changes that occurred.
Without God as a guiding presence in her life, Marji began to rebel against the ever-encroaching fundamentalist institution as much as possible. Under the pretense of religion, Iran strictly enforced new laws against social gatherings and all items of decadence, “They found records and video-cassettes at their place. A deck of cards, a chess set, in other words, everything that’s banned… It earned him seventy-five lashes”(105). This sudden loss of mediums to enjoy one’s self and prevalence of excessive punishment enforcing the declared moral code (132) were invitations to rebel for Marji.
There is an established thought that every person must be an active participant in their life, and this is done by making choices; however, it is accepting responsibility that controls our lives and the people around us. Marjane Satrapi is an outspoken female, who is not afraid to stand up for something she believes in. As she grew up, Islamic Fundamentalists created strict moral and dress codes for the people of Iran. As a woman, she was forced to wear a hijab in a certain manner. At the time, Marjane was studying at an art school.
The audience is presented with a black and white illustration which indicates sorrow or unhappiness. The main character is introduced to a political transformation as her female classmates are required to wear a veil which segregates the children by gender. The veil or hijab symbolizes the community and political variations that reformed the protagonist’s forthcoming. The student writer comprehends major vagaries to females however,

Germaine Greer once said, “Revolution is the festival of the oppressed.”, Through the graphic novel Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi gives a voice to those who were oppressed during the Iranian revolution Ensuring that they are not forgotten. With the use of homogenous features and other stylistic devices, Satrapi shows how she and her classmates, her parents, and other nationalists were marginalised, excluded, and silenced during this time period. From early on in the book, the theme of oppression is ever-present. On page 3, Satrapi introduces herself, expressionless and wearing the veil, stating, “This is me when I was 10 years old”.
In the novel Purple Hibiscus, the reader spends the entire novel waiting for Kambili to transition from a character of silence and submission into an outspoken and self-entitled woman -- something that doesn’t fully happen by the end of the book. However, Kambili has very much changed from the beginning, just not in the dramatic way that the audience expects; Kambili’s life starts with dominance from their father. Kambili and Jaja learn to deal with their problems through silence, and eventually use silence as a means of power. After the Iranian Revolution, it became compulsory for women to wear the veil as the Islamic dress code and all women were removed from government positions, leading to increasing oppression and inequality in Iran. The use of black and white on the first page of the book creates a very clear image that a lot of people are unhappy with the new rules that are introduced by the government. The use of images shows us the oppression of freedom in a way that it would be hard to imagine with words. The first panel shows Marjane in a somber mood, crossing her arms to show her defensive thinking against the veil and the world. In the following panel, the girl’s expressions range from neutral to dislike or discomfort, which shows the general thoughts from people on how they think of the veil.
