. In “Charles,” foreshadowing convinces us that Laurie is Charles. For example, every day when Laurie arrives home from school, he tells his parents about a troublemaker who causes chaos in class. When Laurie’s mom asks for the boy’s name, her son thinks before he speaks.
In the short story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson used several symbols to tell her story about Miss Strangeworth. One of the symbols she used are the letters. The letters symbolize evil, the letters that Miss Strangeworth writes are vividly bitter and very heartless. She writes these letters to try to help and counsel others in her town. Instead of those outcomes, it enraged the town to do more evil to the town.
In “The Lottery” Shirley Jackson uses foreshadowing to hint at the stoning that happens in the last parts of the story. Jackson describes to us about children collecting stones in the beginning of the story. For example, when explaining how the people of the village were gathered at the square, she says, ”Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys, soon followed his example.” (Jackson) This quotation shows that something, later in the story, is going to happen with stones but we don’t know what.

Third-person single vision is displayed through a narrator who is not a part of the story, and the main character, or the POV character, is the only view the reader can see; therefore, the character becomes more developed and the reader becomes more interested. Jackson chose third-person single vision POV for “The Possibility of Evil” because being in the head of only one character causes readers to have a closer connection with the character, all while maintaining suspense. When an author writes in third-person single vision, the reader gets an intimate look into the mind of the POV character, which works especially well when the POV character has a unique and different view than most. As some people believe, switching to omniscient is the ideal POV because the view of others needs to display how Miss Strangeworth’s letter fell out of the mailbox; however, since the author only switches once, third-person single vision is still the better option as it is implemented more throughout the story.
The Lottery In the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, the husbands were the first one to draw a slip from the black box, used for the ritual, in alphabetical order. As soon as the head of the families got their slip of paper, they can open it. Unfortunately, Bill Hutchinson pulled out the slip that tells everyone his household was chosen again to join the ritual. Mr. Hutchinson’s wife accused Mr. Summers, the ritual conductor or host, for not giving his husband enough time while it was his turn to take a random slip from the box.
“Charles” by Shirley Jackson is a realistic fiction cliffhanger about Laurie, his adjustment to kindergarten, and a kid Charles, who seems to be a dreadful influence on the kindergarteners. The story is set in Laurie 's home and at his school. Laurie, his mother, his father, and Charles are the characters in the story. The lesson in the story is that lying leads to more problems than it solves and the author uses foreshadowing and word choice to show the lesson.
Conformity n: action in accord with prevailing social standards, attitudes, practice etc. Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery Disillusionment of Ten O’clock by Wallace Steven both tell a story of conformity being amiss. Recruiting in Jackson's The Lottery for me to believe stoning a villager to death is okay because they call it tradition. Steven’s society adapted into having no imagination. I tried to keep this from being a conformist I agree with Steven and Jackson’s point of conformity being wrong.

In “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson uses foreshadowing when the children are collecting stones from the river and putting them into piles. It hints that something bad is going to happen because it is unusual for boys to be grabbing stones and randomly put them into a pile. For example, while the towns people were getting ready for the lottery the narrator states, “Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example,selecting the smoothest and roundest stones; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix, eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square and guarded it against the raids of the other boys.” (Jackson). This quotation shows that the boys in the village are finding the smoothest and roundest stones and putting them into a big pile.
The short story, “The Lottery” was written and published in 1948, three years after the end of the Second World War. During World War II, there was a system set up called the draft in which the government chooses groups of young men to fight at random. This was very scary and chosen at random for the young men. The draft, in a few ways, refers a lot to “The Lottery” and Shirley Jackson was surely influenced by the recent war in the making of this short story. It is a totally random and scary for the individuals called in both instances.
A specific piece of dialogue also used as foreshadowing by Jackson is “Mr. Summers, who had been waiting, said cheerfully, ‘Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.’” This text is perfect foreshadowing since the eventual death of Mrs. Hutchinson will bring this exchange into fruition. With the use of text and dialogue Jackson was able to provide the reader with foreshadowing, however through the telling of the environment of the story and the plot, she was notably the twist ending. It’s a beautiful summer day and everything seems perfect, but as the reader keeps reading they come to realize that this story is not as simple and straight forward as the title suggest, rather it is a horrifying and dark tale. Shirley Jackson is forwarding the theme on tragic it can be to blindly follow traditions by using foreshowing, symbolism, and dialog. The first literary device Shirley Jackson uses to forward the theme blindly following traditions, is foreshowing. The first example I am going to us I talked about in my introduction.

Connections we had or have with others may lead us to be how we are afterwards or including during that relationship with our significant others. In Etgar Keret’s, “What of the Goldfish Would You Wish For?,” Shirley Jackson’s, “The Lottery,” and “Without Title,” by Diane Glancy, demonstrates how relationships with others can define us.
