The Life of Louie Zamperini At a young age, Louie Zamperini was a kid who would steal things from people and would smoke and drink alcohol. Later in his life, his brother Pete was helpful in his life and got him into running for his school and joined races. He soon qualified for the olympics, running the 5000 meter race in 1936 running for the United States. He then wanted to go to the olympics in Tokyo. Five years later, in 1941, he later joined the United States Army Air Forces. While on a rescue mission, their plane the B-24, crashed into the Pacific Ocean. After the plane crash, he was then spending 47 days of his life on a raft in the middle of the sea with his friend Phil and Mac. When the Japanese found Louie and Phil, he was sent to camps with the Japanese and worked for them. The camps were located in Yokohama, Ofuna, Kejeline, Omari, and Naoetsu. Louie stole things, running away hiding cigarettes and alcohol under bleachers and in a box that he kept in a brick house. “At five, he started smoking, picking up cigarette butts while walking to kindergarten” (5). This quote tells you how Louie was even a bad child in Kindergarten. No other child would pick up cigarettes while walking to school having everyone see how bad of a child they are. “He began drinking one night when he was eight: he hid under the dinner table, snatched glasses of wine, drank them all dry…,” (5). This quote is something that shows you a personality about Louie. He doesn’t care about anything in the world and wants to be free from everything.“People he robbed often chased him, and some threatened to shoot him” (8). If you lived in the same city as Louie, you would get use to him and know what move he’s going to make next. Even though Louie knows he’s going to get yelled at every single time he steals and having a bullet face him, he would still steal and think he can get pass by out running
