When society thinks of any sort of political figure immediately, people think of the most popular, FDR, Lincoln, MLK, etc. Rarely do they think of the figures that did less but moved more. Grover Cleveland was a party leader and President of the United States who stood by ‘Less was more’. Cleveland served first from 1885-1889 and his second term in 1893-1897. Born in New Jersey but raised in New York, Grover Clevlenad lived a hard-working yet cautious childhood. His father, a preacher, was often excessively strict on Cleveland and his siblings and heavily pushed polite behavior. Grover thrived in Politics and in office, known for taking on any task he faced, which pushed him to be elected for President in 1884. Democrats are very fond of Grover Cleveland because they like his influential and independent personality. Clevalenad was known for his conservative fiscal policies, mostly his opposition to government subsidies and tariffs. He also commonly worked to reform the civil service system and vetoed many bills that he found to be unconstitutional or a waste of time/space in government. Grover Clevealnd is mainly known for being the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms, after being the first democrat elected after the civil war. During his first term of presidency he entered a scandal almost immediately. Cleveland was accused of caring for a son out of wedlock, ultimately confirming the rumor of his affair. Despite the scandal, Grover continued to face a number of challenges during his first term of presidency. He was hit with a national railroad strike and a financial crisis. Overall, Cleveland's second term was a confusing and loud period in history marked by crisis, labor messes, and foreign policy challenges. His leadership during this period showcased the best of himself as a political figure. I chose Grover Cleveland for my project because it interested me how insignificant his presidency seems to be but actually is the opposite. Cleveland won his first presidential election by one of the narrowest of margins, it was a win by just 1,200 votes in his adopted home state, New York. Cleveland often said “what is the use of being elected or re-elected unless you stand for something”. This quote interested me because he never had a set agenda or a clear topic he stood for, he was just an honest president. In his second election he won the popular vote but lost the electoral vote to Benjamin Harrison who took his presidency.
