“Imagine being forced to flee your country in order to escape to safety. If you were lucky you had time to pack a bag. If not, you simply dropped everything and ran.” This is how the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, otherwise known as UNHCR, describes the battles that every refugee has to go through, and it stresses the importance of dealing with this time-sensitive issue in the best possible manner. According to the UNHCR, a refugee can be defined as “someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence.” In short, refugees are people who cannot remain in their country because they fear for their lives and feel as though staying back could end in tragedy.

“Immigrants” is a term used to describe people coming to live in a foreign country for whatever reason, while refugees are specifically the people who are moving out of the way of danger by fleeing to another country. Illegal refugees are becoming a problem because they are running out of places to go and desperate times call for desperate measures. The issue here is that not everyone feels safe letting thousands of foreigners enter their country, which is completely understandable as it is very easy for criminals or people with less innocent motivations to take advantage of this situation and slip into a country that had previously been difficult to enter. This proves to be an extremely controversial matter and people are divided between helping others and fearing for their own safety, evidenced by a recent poll that revealed 48% of Canadians were not pleased with the idea of letting in illegal refugees. The atmosphere is quite tense as while it would be ideal to give all the refugees background checks beforehand, that is simply not realistic considering they are coming in large numbers and it is a very delicate and time-sensitive situation.
