Norman Rockwell was an illustrator, an author, and a painter born in New York City on February 3, 1894. Norman always wanted to be an artist but his mother didn’t want him to pursue that as career. Rockwell wasn’t an athletic guy, so that’s when he started to focus more on becoming an artist. Rockwell disliked high school, and even made bad grades in art class because he couldn’t follow the book. He then dropped out of high school and enrolled into the National Academy of Design, then shortly after transferring to the Art of Student League. Also known as “America’s Painter,” Rockwell painted his way through the soul of America starting at a young age of 17, illustrating his first book. After the World War II, in 1943 Rockwell painted the Four Freedoms: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear describing America’s freedom and the reasons behind the war. This was Rockwell’s biggest success in his career and he devoted time into this project. The Four Freedoms painting showed kindness out of Rockwell and wanted this to be a way to come together and win the war.One of Norman Rockwell’s major art work is, “The Dugout.” The Dugout was painted in 1948 for the cover of The Saturday Evening Post. Even though the Chicago Cubs were having a bad season, Rockwell drove to Boston where there was a double header going on, against the Boston Braves and Chicago Cubs. During the game he photographed the fans, along with the players and the coaches in the dugout. Like most paintings, Rockwell uses oil paint, but with this painting he used water color. This painting attracted my attention the most because it captures a lot in one setting. With tremendous detail, you see that Rockwell captured the fans energy perfectly, painting their personalities and reactions towards the Cubs.
