Sugar had excellent power and was unbeatable in that time. He was considered the best fighter in history. The Hall of Famers Sugar beat were, Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Carmen Basilio, Jake LaMotta, Rocky Graziano, Gene Fullmer and Fritzie Zivic. Sugar was so efficient that he won his first fighter of the year award in 1942 and his second fighter of the year award in 1951. He became pro in 1940 and won his first 40 fights before losing against Jake LaMotta. He wouldn't loose for another eight years. During Sugars time as a welterweight he won against Jimmy Doley, Chuck Taylor, Bernard Docusen, Gavilan, and Charlie Fusari. In 1951 Sugar challenged LaMotta. Sugar overwhelmed LaMotta with his speed and power. LaMotta ended up stopping in the 13th round. Which made Sugar Ray Robinson the winner. During the welterweight Sugar and Lamotta had met six times and that was their last. Sugar was upset with Randy Turpin. In the rematch they had, Sugar knocked Randy out in the 10th round. Sugar followed with beating Graziano and Carl Olsen, before challenging heavyweight King Joey Maxim. Sugar and Maxim met in the Yankees stadium. The stadium was 100 degrees.
