The snow that had covered the earth the night before glistened as the sun grew brighter and brighter on its daily climb to the top of the sky. The chickadees were chirping away as though they were actually speaking with each other as they scrounged for food. Warm in her Dr. Denton’s, Hope listened patiently and intently outside her parents’ bedroom for the sounds that would tell her Rose and Jake were up and about. They stirred, and although their voices were muffled, that was all Hope needed. She dashed down the stairs as fast as she could, holding on to the banister as she went. She made it to the living room just as Rose and Jake got to the top of the stairs and were on their way down. Looking at the toys lined up on both sides of the unused fireplace, Hope screamed excitedly, "Oh, Mommy, Daddy, look what Santa brought me! He found me! He really found me! I knew he would.” Thanks to the pressing need to economize on coal deliveries, the house was chilly. Rose in her nightgown and Jake in his pajamas, both pulled their bathrobes tightly around them to keep warm. Their bathrobes, like most things in the Mertz household, had seen better days. Hope was too busy showing her parents what Santa had brought, to notice something as insignificant as a cold
