Learn to Fail [ Feb. 12, 2012], failure is the most significant, but hurtful step towards a successful life. If a person has never honestly dealt with failure, how can they possibly ever improve or move forward? It is important to learn and be able to solve problems in society, whether it is for academic or not.
In the short story “It’s That It Hurts” by Tomas Rivera, a boy gets expelled. The “it” in this short story is his hope, because he hopes that he will be a telephone operator, hopes that his mother will walk in with him on his first day of his new school, and he hopes that he won’t get in trouble with his parents. This shows that his hope is lost throughout the short story. To begin with, his parents have always had high hopes that their son will become a telephone operator. When he gets expelled he starts thinking that he won’t be a success to his parents, because he won’t graduate and succeed in his dream job.
In the short story “It’s that it hurts” by Tomas Rivera, a boy gets expelled for fighting at school. The “It” that hurts is the boy’s lack of pride. The boy’s pride was splintered by having to be nude in the sight of a complete stranger. In the story the boy had to strip down naked in front of the nurse. This hurt his pride because he was uncomfortable with stripping down in front of a stranger.
He pointed out Mr. Cathey consistent bombardments of challenges and how he handle each situation. Every good point in his life such as becoming a father was met with a bad point in which he couldn’t go to school because he became a father. The author allowed us to feel happy for the situations that seemed any reasonable person would feel good about and upset about the unforeseen variables that tend to find Mr. Cathey. The author makes sure you feel the joy and pain of a young man who could have made it to a higher level but came up short because of his bad decision
Ben’s Mother never gives up on Ben’s education because she knows and learned from her own mistakes. She doesn 't want Ben to follow her footsteps, so Ben’s Mother makes it her life goal to make Ben treasure his education. She makes him treasure the education because she only has a third grade education and it came and bit her in the butt. Ben’s mother makes Ben education better by making him read 2 books each week and write a book report about it, But the thing is Ben’s mother doesn 't even know how to read. The result from Ben and his mother hard work payed off, when Ben got into a great college and later on became a famous world wide surgeon.
Chris, the protagonist is born into a period of the Great Depression and sets unrealistic and unattainable goals. His attempts at escape leaves Chris in state of that which is a broken psychologically. Chris faces multiple internal and external conflicts that get in the way of achieving his dream. Conflicts involving his Grandfather and his environment as well as internal conflict regarding himself. The father’s wife had recently died, leaving him with the boy to take care of with the only mindset of keeping him alive, doing anything for their survival. This affected the father in a big way, leaving him with little hope and hardly any reason to stay alive, but the boy was “his warrant” (McCarthy 5) , his only reason for life. The boy starts out very scared and weak, always wanting to hide behind his father, knowing that one day he will die. The boy matures with every event that happens, and he maintains to have hope throughout most of them. “The man fell back instantly and lay with blood bubbling from the hole in his forehead.
In the midst of all of this he finds a balance by focusing on what really matters. At the same time this keeps him focused on his main goal which is education. Education will be his family's way out of poverty. Through seeing his younger brother that is unemployed and will be having a child soon he looks beyond this and is genuinely proud of where he comes from. He realizes how strong his family is when he seems them fighting through poverty and making things.

He is at a dead end job working on roofs, he sees himself going nowhere because he is a high school dropout and is looking towards drugs and alcohol for an escape. But everything seems to change when he gets the news that he is going to be a father soon. Becoming a father gave him the mindset that he was going to have to be more responsible now. As his son got older he decided to change his life for him and his son so he began to read books to him. He practiced over and over and three years later he decided that he wanted to go back to get his GED.
Elementary school is a big step, especially getting ready for middle school. For example if one is bitter towards someone, meaning jealous or angry, then their middle school years won’t go very well. They will go through being angry and it will make them focus on less important stuff rather than their studies or sports. Similar to the boy in “The Jacket” by “Gary Soto,”he goes through his life being jealous of kids that are happy or have good relationships and new clothes. The boy does not like the jacket his mother got him and does not appreciate it enough, even though it gets the job done.

Back then when I was little, Aaron, as an adolescent, always acted with a professional manner, while his parents continuously bragged about his academic achievements. I always thought that it made sense for someone like him to be well rounded at such a young age, since I knew how over the top his parents can be about school. They were those types of parents with the “because I said so” attitude, enforcing their rules through yelling and physical punishment. You could imagine everybody’s surprise when we found out that he ended up piercing his ears and later on getting a tattoo without his parent’s permission. The once courteous young man became involved in many different rebellious activities until one day later on he ran out of money to continue to live in his apartment.
Finally, in the end of the novel, students share their feelings about graduation through their journal entries. One student tells his story of being the first to graduate high school and continue onto college, proving that dreams can be achieved, and new paths can be created. He says, “Historians say history repeats itself, but in my case I have managed to break the cycle because I 'm going to graduate from high school and go to college, an opportunity my parents never had”(205). This really emphasizes the theme of the entire book, which is that change is possible, and the sky 's the limit. Once a hoodlum, this young man has matured into a true student, being the first in his family to even graduate, plus he will go on to college
