“Lather and Nothing Else” What effect does the story’s setting (both time and place) have on the main character’s thoughts, actions and choices? How would you react if you had to adapt to that setting? Provide supporting details. I feel that the setting of the story really changed how the story progressed. The barber was shaving the beard of the general of the enemy army during a time of great tension and fighting between both sides. This was really obscured timing for the general to come in to shave his beard. If the general were to have come for a shave before the tensions, the barber would have been at ease while shaving him. The barber knew that it was indeed the enemy general who came, and knew that something was off about him being so relaxed around him. They had also taken prisoners which made it a funny time to shave your beard. The setting of the story was peculiar as the general knew that the barber disliked and would probably try to kill him. The general just wanted to test the barber to see if when given the easy chance, would he be able to kill him. The setting of the story changed the barber’s reaction to the general coming in for a shave because he could feel that something was wrong and that there was no way that the general was this naïve. If I had to adapt to this setting, it would throw me off because I wouldn’t know if the general was actually relaxed or if it was a trap and he was planning to kill me. I would probably be cautious and just shave his beard so I could go on with my life and he could go on with his. I would have been nervous to have such a powerful man in my shop and that he was also from the enemy army. It would have been hard to not cut him by accident from my hands
