In the short story The American Way, by Frances Khirallah Noble, I found money to be most intriguing. Throughout the story Mansour and his family transformed from having no money to buying almost anything he or his family desired. Mansour and his brother Jimmy, found an efficient way to make money, however this method was unethical. I can relate to Mansour's need for money and desperate situations. This hunger and need for money caused me to obtain a full time job at the age of fourteen. In the short story The American Way, the main character, Mansour, was in debt by several acquaintances. Mansour managed small wagers who often won bets. Unfortunately, his winners left him and his profit began to crumble. When I was younger money was scarce in the house hold. For this reason, I have always desired a job to bring money into my home. Also, my mother had troubles with satisfying my wants as a child. This encouraged me to obtain a job of my own at the age of fourteen as well as work full time hours. I was still enrolled in school and it was illegal to work these hours. However, I was making tremendous pay and no one cared to say anything nor stop me. I felt independent and more responsible to be able to take care of myself. Growing up, I would always debate with my grandmother about having a job because I felt that myself as a teenager can work as hard as any adult. Although I did not prove my point to anyone, I was satisfied to have proved this to myself. As I worked my first my first job, at the age of fourteen, I have witnessed numerous adults slack or terminated. I was proud to be truthfully one of the best workers in the establishment.
