In This short story a young Virginian by the name of carter Druse decides to join the Union army of the North over the Confederate army of the south. One morning at breakfast, Carter tells his father that he was going to join the Union army instead of the confederate army leaving his father too shocked to speak. His father replies back saying that he is a traitor of the south and to not tell his mother this horrible news. Carters father pauses looking deep into his son eyes and says "No matter what happens -- be sure you always do what you think is your duty. Both Carter Druse and his father left the table that morning with broken hearts. And Carter soon left his home. Carter hesitates because when he was aiming his rifle at the horsemen he catches the confederate soldiers face and he recognizes the face. He observes the face even hard and sees that the horsemen happens to be his father. Knowing this he hesitates because he can't shot family more specifically his father but it's his duty and shoots the horse and not his father knowing the horse would fall of the cliff leading to his fathers death. After all of this, a Sargent of the Union army arrives to Carters location and asks Carter who he shot at and he replies back at the officer and says "my father". Now that I have gone over what the main character has done in this short story, i now want to go over what I would change about the main character, Carter Druse. The thing I would change about Carter in this short story novel is his motive to becoming a Union soldier rather than becoming a Confederate soldier. The reason I would make this change is because it changes the story completely. One, thing that would change in the story is During breakfast time, instead of leaving in bad hands, Carter would still be with parents and possibly be fighting alongside his father with the Confederate army instead of fighting against his
