Frederick Douglass was an African American who escaped slavery and later on worked as an abolitionist. He was born into slavery, but had been fortunate enough to learn how to read and write from his owner’s wife and poor boys that he met on the streets. Through this knowledge, he began to advocate against slavery and equality for all. His first contribution began through several public speeches and his autobiography called The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, An American Slave. His book explained the experiences he went through as a slave, and how he escaped slavery.
He wanted answers and fast. He then continued to find out more and more as he searched for years. As he was searching for answers he was transferred to a place called Colonel Edward Lloyd’s farm. This is where he met a couple named Mr and Mrs Auld. At first, Mrs Auld was the nicest, sweetest, and most sincere to Douglass.
Abolitionism was a well-known movement around the time of the Civil War and its aim was to put an end to slavery. The people of the early nineteenth century viewed the elimination of slavery in numerous ways. Some fought against the end of slavery, some appeared to mildly support the cause and yet others wholeheartedly supported the ending of slavery until their dying day. Charles Finney was a religious leader who promoted social reforms such as the abolition of slavery. He also fought for equality in education for women as well as for African Americans.
Progress is something everyone has to struggle and fought it through. Without progress and struggles, people wouldn't know how to make something better. Frederick Douglass once said that “If there’s no struggle, there’s no progress.” The struggle can be a physical struggle or a moral struggle, and any of them would work.
Fredrick Douglass meets Hugh Auld’s wife Sophia and he is surprised about how nice she is. She does not really know how to treat slaves because she has never had them. A slave with education is said to be a dangerous slave so they are not supposed to be taught. However it seems like Mrs. Auld did not know that, and she began to teach Douglass the Alphabet which is a big turning point in Douglass’s life as a slave. Mr. Auld figures out that his wife has been teaching Douglass, and he puts an end to it, and he tells her how dangerous it is to teach a slave.
Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography My Bondage and my Freedom in order to prove to the world that even though he was an eloquent speaker, he had once been a salve. In one chapter, initially Mrs. Auld was glad about Douglass’s reading because she taught him. “My mistress-who had begun to teach me,” (Douglass pg 521). I think that Mrs. Auld is later “violent in her opposition” to Douglass’s reading because her husband taught her that slaves are things and not people.
Many individuals, without any given option, were conflicted of multiple hardships through an early stage in their life to late adulthood only for the sake of making money for other’s benefit. Enduring such forced labor proved to be difficult for anyone eating “ash cake” (Online Douglass 68). The end results never took a pleasant appearance due to the fact that many fell ill to such cruelty, or even worse many died before ever having any contact with family. Thus leading a man by the name of Frederick Douglass to apostatize and acquire a mentality, by means of learning how to read and write, that no human is to stand idle against such a barbarous thing as slavery. In life, humans have many different traits that describes themself. In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, by Frederick Douglass shows life a slave in the nineteenth century. In the story, Douglass brings us back in time to show his experiences of the hypocrisy of human nature. Disputes with Douglass and his masters are seen throughout the story showing both the good and bad traits of human nature. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is Frederick Douglass’s autobiography in which Douglass goes into detail about growing up as a slave and then escaping for a better life. During the early-to-mid 1800s, the period that this book was written, African-American slaves were no more than workers for their masters. Frederick Douglass recounts not only his personal life experiences but also the experiences of his fellow slaves during the period. This book was aimed at abolitionists, so he makes a point to portray the slaves as actual living people, not the inhuman beings that they are treated as. Education is the light at the end of the tunnel, when Frederick uses it he discovers hope. In the story the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Frederick goes through many struggles on his path to freedom, showing us the road from slavery to freedom. At the beginning of the book, Douglass is a slave in both body and mind. When the book ends, he gets both his legal freedom and frees his mind. The path to freedom was not easy, but it got clearer when he got an education.
The power of education is a main theme within A Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. Douglass 's experiences lead him to recognize its great power and to believe that education is a key in our life. It has the power to open all doors while providing us with several opportunities. Education makes the difference; it expands the human mind since the more we know the more enlightened we are. It makes us free and it avoid us to be enslaved, too.
