Introduction Abortion has been at the forefront of the news lately because of the Roe v. Wade laws being overturned in the United States of America. This was a big shock for a lot of people as they either believe people should have the right to choose or they are completely against abortion and these laws make abortion illegal. In Canada, there are no laws for abortion so you have a choice based on your morals if or when you want an abortion. Even though there is abortion access in every province and territory there are still too few hospitals and physicians performing abortions which perpetuates inequities in access to the procedure. The gestational age for abortion is not regulated so if a province or territory has a lower gestational age, it limits the number of people that can access an abortion because they may not know or decide they need an abortion until after the gestational age that is determined by the facility closest to them. Another factor that limits access to abortion is the cost associated with it. A resident of Canada for 3 months becomes a part of the universal health plan which covers the cost of healthcare procedures in any province or territory in Canada. Some people are not able to have coverage for their abortions like undocumented immigrants, people with coverage under their parent or spouse’s plan but want confidentiality, and certain refugees and visitors to Canada. Another cost limitation was abortions in a clinic until about 2015 and medical abortions until about 2019. These limitations to accessing abortions cause issues with autonomy and inequality because it is not accessible for everyone as healthcare should be. The best example of this is the overturn of Roe v. Wade since abortion was legal in the United States of America for 50 years and all of a sudden those rights are taken away and it feels like a step back in time. This sudden criminalization limits self-autonomy, encourages illegal abortions, and increases children born into unsafe environments. The people that are most affected by these laws are people of racial minorities who already struggle to access medical services, government support, and may not want to bring children into a world where they can’t be properly supported. The people that already face social determinants of health are faced with greater inequalities due to not being able to access abortion. Illegal abortions are extremely dangerous but can be the only option for women whose lives are at risk from pregnancy. It is not ethical to take people's rights away and put them in danger because they are pregnant. The criminalization of abortion goes against utilitarianism as it forces people to be in pain and harm just to please the people who don't understand what it’s like to be forced into a pregnancy they don’t
