One of the biggest reasons schools should not have sports is to decrease the rate of academic failure. The text states that After school sports have been around for many years, some people think school sports are a bad idea, but others do not. According to researchers who disagree with the idea that schools should keep afterschool athletics, if the district removed extracurricular activities there would be more money to put in actual academic purposes, and it will also prevent injuries.Therefore, schools should eliminate afterschool sports to decrease academic failure rates, save money, and to lessen distractions.

During football season in particular, focus shifts away from learning.”Ripley {11} The text also states that “Players spend long hours practicing, and the commitment extends to the rest of the school from late night band practices, and pep rallies to meetings with parents. Athletics even dictate when school starts: Despite research showing that later that start times improve student performance, many schools begin before 8 a.m., partly to preserve afternoon daylight hours for athletic practice.” Ripley {11} This shows that athletes are spending more time at practice and then they are tired the next day. This is important because students are not focusing on their academics, and if this continues their grades will drop. If their grades become low enough, they won't be able to participate in school sports any longer.
