Should athletes be allowed to skip gym class? Since many students participate in varsity sports, they should be allowed to skip gym. This will give them more time for other interests and/or work. Students who participate in competitive sports should be able to skip gym class, as they already are fit and exercise more than students in gym. First of all, athletes already get a lot of exercise, so they don’t need to take gym because of lack of exercise. This makes gym practically useless for them. While gym students exercise 4 hours and 30 minutes per week, athletes exercise for 12 hours per week. Athletes already get way more exercise than gym students, so they should have the ability to skip gym. Also, gym class provides minimal to no benefit for athletes. Since they already exercise a lot, gym class doesn’t help them improve their fitness level. Since athletes already get more exercise, they should have the ability to skip gym. Next, student athletes need a free period to focus on their other, academic classes, in order to graduate. This will help them later in life. These athletes don’t get home until 5 p.m, and don’t get home until 10 p.m on game days. They have lack of sleep because of this, and need more time to manage their schedules better. These people feel like athletes taking gym have more benefits than athletes opting out of gym. In gym, athletes will learn about things like diet and nutrition that aren’t provided in varsity sports. Although this may be true, athletes are already fit, so they don’t need to learn all that information. Also, other students may think that it is unfair that athletes can skip gym. But, those students also have the opportunity to participate in varsity sports and skip gym. Although gym may have some benefits for athletes, the disadvantages outweigh those few
