It's normal for some of the best basketball players in the world to go to college for only one year and then get drafted into the league, but why should they have to go to college for just one year and then go to the league. In 2006 the NBA changed the rule that allowed players to go straight to the league out of high school. It used to be that if a player was a great player in high school they wouldn’t even think about going to college because they knew that they would make enough money from being drafted. But in 2006 they changed the rule to not allow players straight out of high school to go to the NBA. This wasn’t expected because it didn’t seem like there was anything wrong with players coming straight out of high school and some of the best players in the league at the time had come straight out of high school. Kevin Love, a player who was affected by the rule change by having to go to college for one year at UCLA in 2008, in 2018 said, “When you have that opportunity… to achieve your dream and start making money for not only yourself, but to be able to take care of your family and start building your business, I think it can be really powerful” (qtd. in Zahn). In this Love speaks on the money aspect of going straight to the NBA out of high school. This is one of the biggest drivers in the argument of allowing players to go straight to the league. One thing that the side that says high schoolers should be allowed to go straight to the NBA is they might get hurt or do something that makes them not get drafted. Some players who were top prospects out of high school have seemed to not pan out in college because of the school aspect of college. Even if players think that they should be able to get through one year of college to get to the NBA, they underestimate the work ethic needed to play a sport in college. While the other side says that players need to go to college for at least the year to get an education. People believe that the one year of college is great for the league because it puts smarter players and are more role models for the younger generation. The differences though slight are still really big in the
