Did you know that an estimated 6.8 billion of the population worldwide already owns a cell phone? Did you also know that 88 percent of teenagers, ages 13 to 17 have or have access to a cell phone (Fernholz, 2014)? As more and more people are getting a phone, schools are actually banning these devices. Why? Well, some schools think that phones are a distraction; they can be used to cheat on a test, can be used to cyberbully, and can be distracting. But cell phones have more purposeful reasons to be allowed in classrooms. Cell phones should be allowed in classrooms because it can be used to call for help in the case of an emergency, can be used to do assignments as well as save paper, and students can study information better by using the cameras …show more content…

Since 2013, 302 school shootings have occurred just in America(302 School Shootings In America Since 2013, 2018). Many of these school shootings were not life threatening because of cell phones. According to an article about cell phones in the case of an emergency, Richard Caster, a consultant on security and other school services for the Ohio School Boards Association said "When you talk to schools about being prepared, the biggest problem is denial -- it can 't happen here." (O 'Donnell, 2012) Schools can be prepared if they allow cell phones. When an intruder has entered the building, school goes on lockdown and all the students have to do is dial 9-1-1 and not even talk to them and the police will show up if they are allowed to bring in their cell phones. Let’s say that a student is walking to the bathroom and he notices someone who doesn’t have a visitor tag and has a big bag that looks suspicious. If that student has a phone on them, then they could get into a restroom and call 911. The police would show up to the school and arrest that person or make sure that person is not going to harm anyone.
