Cigarette smoking is becoming more of an issue in the United States, from smoking because you are addicted to smoking to fit in with your friends or coworkers. Cigarette smoking should be banned in the United States for many reasons, not on all tobacco because that is another argument, cigarettes have the most detrimental effects on society. A ban on cigarette smoking can have a negative effect on the economy, implementation can be difficult, and personal rights are an issue, however, cigarettes should be banned in the United States because of health issues associated with them, excessive advertisement, and exorbitant prices. However, when is the line crossed? One of the highest foreign substances that kills people in the United States is cigarettes. If, this is going on every year 480,000 deaths a year, should something be done for the better good? Well if banning cigarettes is what it takes to start reducing the number of deaths in America then something should be done about it. Yes, people have the right to do what they want with what they want especially to their body, but there needs to be a line. Not, only are cigarettes causing tons of deaths a year, but they cause tons of health issues and are a leading cause of cancer.
The United States government has the right to put a ban on cigarettes “Federal drug regulations operate under the authority of Article, Section 8, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution, better known as the Commerce Clause” (Head par. 3). If the government is constitutionally able to ban cigarettes then it would not be a violation of personal rights if they were to be banned. Now, the question is whether it would be ethical for the government to ban cigarettes.
