Do you think college athletes should be paid? College Athletes should be paid. In 2021-22 alone, colleges had 695 billion dollars of profit. That is profit alone, the colleges already took out all of their expenses. And with close to 4,000 colleges in the United States, that is an average of 130 million dollars per college. Colleges can spare a few hundred thousand dollars to play their athletes. They should be paid because college athletes bring in money, they don’t have time for a job, and the sport causes damage to their body.

College athletes spend most of their time practicing and perfecting their craft. NCSA College Recruiting states, “The premier collegiate student-athletes essentially have two full-time jobs: student and athlete. To meet the demands of both, many Division I student-athletes end up committing nearly 60 hours to school and sports, leaving very little time for anything else.” With the standard job, you work 40-50 hours a week. With the amount of time college athletes spend on meeting the demands of a student athlete, there is not very much time left over. And people still say they can just get a job if they need money. Most people say that college athletes get all of their things paid for. As in housing, food, tuition, books, and anything else they might need to survive in college. That is not true, Scholarship History states, “Even so, full D1 scholarships usually cover tuition and fees, room, board, and course-related books. Most student-athletes who receive these scholarships receive an amount covering a portion of these costs.” This shows that college athletes do not always get their food paid for, and they do not get any money for things they want to do outside of the school. College athletes deserve a life outside of school, and they need money for that. College athletes put their bodies and health on the line for the fans' entertainment and for their future. If they have a career ending injury they need a litte money to fall back on. The Cardinal states, “If you look at the overall percentage of college player injuries across all sports both major and minor, a whopping 90% of college athletes report they have been injured whilst playing and a whopping 54% say they have continued playing after being injured” (Blake). College athletes know that every time they take the field, court, or arena that there is a chance they could get hurt. Lots of people say that it’s the athletes choice to play because they know the risks. “five out of every ten concussions go unreported, and 57% of college injuries go either unreported or untreated” (Blake). College athletes are still human, they need to have some funds to fall back on if they get injured. Lots of college athltes play through injury because of the chance of losing their scholarship and not having any money or funds to survive off and go to school. It is the right thing to do, to help a college athlete to be able to survive if they are injured and lose their scholarship or have their scholarship not coninued. College athletes need to be paid for the reason of putting their bodies on the line for their scholarship and the entertainment of
