The topic of whether or not to pay college athletes has been a controversial debate for many years. While many people argue that athletes work for the school, making them student workers, others argue that they simply hold the athlete title. The debate is not only about paying them, but who all will get paid and where their income will come from. When deciding on which side to choose, there are many factors one must consider. We must contemplate what it means to be a college student, what it means to specifically be an undergraduate student, and what it means when they sign the contract to play their sport. After analyzing each of the considerations, it is clear that there is no need to pay college athletes, nor a way to successfully fund their salaries. College, or higher education, is a place we go to further our knowledge. While we are in college there are many opportunities to get involved. People can join clubs, sororities, or even play sports. Some players practice for as long as thirty hours a week, longer than a part-time job (Businessinsider.com). If they are putting in the hours, they should be paid for their work and they should be able to receive compensation when injured. However, when they sign up for a college sport they know what they are getting in to. They are expressed their rights and responsibilities. Even after hearing that they will be putting in all the work with no pay, they still decide to play. This shows that most of them can’t complain too much about the money because they are the ones who signed up for their taxing sport.
