A topic that is debatable ubiquitously across the country is whether college athletes should be paid or not. Is it fair that college athletes must win championships, be held accountable for their academics, attend practice regularly, and continue to maintain a set grade point average without being paid? Yes, being an athlete and a student is a difficult task. Athletes are expected to hold a high reputation and for themselves and the college. In any case, college athletes should be given benefits but not salaries. An alternative to giving monetary rewards are scholarships. Colleges and universities should give the athletes who are diligent and able to maintain exemplary grade point averages scholarships. Athletes receive “full-ride” scholarships but do not actually cover all their expenses, but they are not able to pay for their families to attend games. Scholarships, most times, covers all the athlete’s expenses such as tuition, room and board, and books. Athletes are not responsible for paying for their family. This could result in a greater amount of student debt, which is unfair for students who is looking to obtain a degree. Only 7% of high school athletes proceed to play sports in college, and only 2% play in Division I colleges. (The Creightonian Nov. 9, 2017.) Being a college athlete is a privilege, because not many people are able to say they can play the game or can receive money for being an athlete. An increase in fees, would result in less students attending college and having no higher education than high school level.
